Judging by the line that formed right after Immortal Technique announced he would be at his merch table after his set to meet, greet, and sign things for fans, he very much speaks to the radically independent political nature of Portland. It is not impossible to take a heady approach to art but also have a genuinely good time, it just takes a master of the craft to construct that experience on stage.

His set consisted of a mix of old and new material, with the required nods back to Reflection Eternal and Black Star as well as material from his latest album, interspersed with samples from popular culture that served as short intermissions for the lyricist and dance breaks for the audience. While he is often pigeon-holed as an overtly political and conscious rapper, the proceedings demonstrated that he has a vision and wit but also that he knows how to throw a party at the same time. Talib Kweli has been around a long time, impressing with his pure lyrical prowess since the mid-late 90’s, and last week at the Roseland Theater, he showed this pedigree.
